#4 Update of the Port of Melilla’s managing software system, its Data Processing Center (DPC)

Find out more

The Port of Melilla has been working with a DPC that is already around 8 years old and, even though it still works, has become obsolete. Updating the DPC will involve adapting it to the latest technological specifications so that it will work in a more streamlined and simpler way; and combining its software and hardware to create a hyper-converged infrastructure that will bring efficiency and speed. This update will mean we will be working with a safer DPC with fail-over and optimised energy consumption.

Port of Melilla’s managing software

Our current managing software (ERP and document manager) is obsolete, it lacks coordination features, and is weak and restrictive.

This project aims, on one hand, to update the ERP so that it’s incorporated to the Institution’s software system. On the other hand it aims to implement essential information security updates, a better system integration, and a better interface design and usability. These will allow us to include all the new features in the document management system of the Port’s Authority.

Stages

This update will be carried out in 6 main stages:

1. Installation of the new and updated ERP according to the Authority’s needs.

2. Optimisation of the document management system.

3. Installation and set-up of the DPC’s new server chassis and storage arrays.

4. Improvements to the document management system of the Port of Melilla.

5. Data and services migration from the old system to the new one. In this stage both systems will be functioning at the same time.

6. Disposal of the old infrastructure.

Objectives

The main objectives of this project is to ensure that the port stays operational and can keep the town supplied, and to increase the port’s safety and that of its users and of the goods it holds with an updated management software and a new, more efficient and eco-friendly DPC. Thanks to these the Authority will be able to process and store more of the data it needs to run its internal, organisational processes and the services it provides. Among the new systems we plan to set up we can highlight:

Contracts

Contract no. 1 DPC update

Melilla’s Port Authority uses a Data Processing Centre to process and store data. The infrastructure connects to the internet to establish channels through which to communicate and collaborate with the rest of the world and, in particular, with the rest of the port community. Constant communication with the port community is essential for the port to function and to maintain the supply chain between sea and inland transport.
